Abstract
SPT2147 and SPT0418 are lensed submillimeter galaxies at z=3.7 and z=4.2 respectively, the most intrinsically luminous of the 4 target galaxies in the JWST ERS program 'TEMPLATES'. While JWST will provide detailed diagnostics at longer wavelengths for this Dusty Star Forming Galaxy, the crucial complementary groundwork in the near-infrared and optical has yet to be done. Specifically, while JWST will map out Halpha and Pa-alpha spectral regimes, the OIII, Hbeta, and/or OII, MgII lines are not covered, and can be measured with a dedicated 8m effort from the ground. F2 observations offer a route to characterizing the strength and ratios of these lines and begin the analysis of the SMG as JWST prepares to launch. The combined Gemini-JWST dataset will yield complete characterization of the gas phase ISM, including star formation, metallicity and outflows.
