Abstract

We have performed a detailed spectroscopic and photometric model atmosphere analysis of nearby bright spectroscopically confirmed DA white dwarfs in the SDSS and Pan-STARRS footprint. Based on this analysis, we identify 64 double degenerates in the solar neighborhood, 42 of which are new. All of these objects show significant flux contribution from previously unknown companions, and are excellent candidates to show double lines. Here we request Gemini time to sample the radial velocity curves of the six of the massive candidates over multiple nights to constrain their orbital periods, component masses, mass ratios, and gravitational wave merger times. Double-lined white dwarfs wih massive components have been elusive. Here we have a chance to significantly enlarge this sample.
