Title:Time-critical followup of deep-south newly discovered NEOWISE near-Earth objects
PI:Joseph Masiero

Abstract

The NASA NEOWISE mission is currently surveying the sky, searching for new Near-Earth Objects using infrared light and providing characterization of known objects. Because NEOWISE is senstive to low albedo asteroids, its discoveries often have visible magnitudes near or below the detectability limit of many of the followup resources in the southern hemisphere. To ensure that all discoveries receive sufficient astrometric followup to establish an orbit solution, we request Target of Opportunity time on Gemini South to observe new, faint NEOs found at southern declinations. This would be a continuation of our previously successful Large and Long Program and is critical to establishing NEO orbits for physical property determination and characterization followup.
