Abstract
We propose to determine carbon abundance ratios, [C/Fe], for a sample of previously identified bright very metal-poor stars, by obtaining follow-up medium-resolution spectroscopy of candidates selected from the RAVE (RAdial Velocity Experiment) final data release. We have prepared a list of several hundred candidates, with 8 < B < 14, and available at essentially all RAs in both hemispheres. We plan to use both GMOS spectrographs, exclusively in Poor Weather conditions, to follow-up these candidates. We hope to observe a combined sample of at least 300 metal-poor stars in 2015A. These medium-resolution spectra will be used to confirm the available atmospheric parameters from RAVE, as well as to determine [C/Fe] and [alpha/Fe], using our spectroscopic analysis pipeline. This information will enable the identification of many new carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars, including representatives of the inner- and outer-halo populations, for which high-resolution spectroscopy can be carried out from the ground, and for the brightest stars (B < 11), with HST STIS or COS.
