Abstract

This proposal aims to map the gas and stellar velocity fields in Circumnuclear Starforming regions in spiral galaxies with active nuclei, and derive the physical conditions (such as density, temperatures, abundances, ionization structure) of the gas. In order to perform this task both high spatial and spectral resolutions are needed as requested here. This proposal is novel and its results can have profound implications on our knowledge and interpretation of the properties derived from emission line fluxes, among others: the classification of the activity in the central regions of galaxies, the inferences about the nature of the source of ionization, and the gas abundance determinations. High resolution 3D spectroscopy with GEMINI IFUs is the ideal tool to approach this issue.
