Abstract

Using data obtained from the GAMA redshift survey we have constructed a sample of 14 systems that share the major properties of the MW-Magellanic system: an L* galaxy with two close proximity masive satellites. We propose to observe the faint end of 7 of these systems that are observable in semester 12B. By estimating redshifts with photo-z we will be able to get a robust understanding of how atypical the faint end of the MW satellite luminosity function is, and put constraints on the scatter we should expect in abundance matching (assigning bayonic mass to dark matter subhalos). This will inform the work of future simulations since currently they compare results to the MW halo, which may be a special case.
