PI:Christopher Onken

Abstract

We request 1 hour to conduct the 2011 Gemini School Astronomy Contest, in which Australian students will compete to choose a target that GMOS-South will image. The first Contest, in 2009, saw the winning picture of the Glowing Eye Nebula appear both on the cover of Australian Sky & Telescope magazine and in an ApJ publication. Data for the 2010 Contest should be obtained soon. We expect the 2011 Contest will build upon the publicity generated by the earlier competitions and will do even more to get young people interested in science. Beyond the public outreach aspects of the Contest, there is significant potential for scientific discoveries to come from the images, as shown by our experience with the Glowing Eye Nebula as well as that of similar Canadian contests.
