Abstract

This proposal aims at obtaining deep photometric (g,r,i) images of the elliptical cD galaxy NGC 5044. These images will be used to study the properties of the globular cluster system around that galaxy, like color distribution, spatial distributions, luminosity function. The magnitude of the turn-over of the luminosity function will help to confirm the distance to the target galaxy. The observations will provide a clean database for further spectroscopic studies using GMOS, in a later phase of the project, in an attempt to analyze the kinematics of the system. The NGC 5044 globular cluster system is completely unstudied and this galaxy lies at the center of a group intermediate between rich groups and poor clusters.
