Abstract
We propose to observe with the GNIRS IFU a good
sized sample of spectral template stars at moderate S/N (~50-60), at
R=5900 resolution for the region including the CO 2.3-2.4mu
overtone bands, to be used as a library for analysis of the stellar kinematic in nearby galaxies both
active nuclei and quiescent. At low to moderate S/N, the cross correlation technique
is very sensitive to the spectral type of the template star. A late
spectral template combined with a low S/N will result in
over-estimating the velocity dispersion. Using a combination of
templates or testing different spectral types is the best approach,
but opposite to what is seen in the optical where a large number of
libraries spanning a range of spectral types exists, in the near-IR at
R=6000 there are very little if any datasets available.
