Abstract
We propose to observe two nearby edge-on spiral galaxies with GMOS, in order to detect the resolved stellar populations of their halos, to look for changes in the populations with height above the galaxy midplane, and compare halo and thick disk stellar populations. One of our galaxies is in the North and one in the South. We therefore submit a pair of identical proposals, one for each galaxy. This proposal is for NGC3109, in the South. These two galaxies are part of a larger sample of five galaxies (the others are observable in 06b) and will be some of the first observations able to detect a stellar halo.
