Title: | The Cosmic Distribution of Heavy Elements at $z\gtrsim 6$ |

Abstract
We propose to acquire high signal-to-noise ratio, moderate resolution
$J$ band spectra of two $z\gtrsim 6$ QSOs, to survey the distribution
of carbon and silicon in the intergalactic medium when the universe
was $\le 1$ Gyr old. These data will be used to study the evolution
of cosmic carbon abundances with redshift, as well as the nature of
the background radiation field at the end of the reionization epoch.
