Title:Gemini Legacy Imaging
PI:Travis Rector

Abstract

We request an hour each on GN and GS with GMOS to create color composite images for the Gemini Legacy program. The purpose of this program is for pubic outreach, to share capabilities of the Gemini telescopes and show beautiful celestial objects. For this semester we propose to target the planetary nebula NGC 1514 with GN, and the LMC star-forming region NGC 2040. Our goal is to create the "best in class" image for each object, surpassing any existing images from amateur or professional observatories. To do so, an hour is required for each target. The attached document shows the best available images as well as an example setup of the Phase2 to show the FOV and guide-star availability. Each target is well suited to GMOS and its narrow-band filters, and suitable guide stars are also available.
