Abstract

We propose to use GMOS on Gemini-North and Gemini-South to observe bright (g < 14) very metal-poor (VMP, [Fe/H] < -2.0) candidates selected from LAMOST DR5 to obtain medium-resolution (R = 3700) spectra. These spectra will enable determination of more accurate stellar atmosphere parameters (Teff, log g, and [Fe/H]) and abundances of C, Mg, Sr, and Ba. In turn, the measured stellar parameters and abundances will allow us to confirm the status of CEMP and VMP stars of our candidates, classify CEMP stars into CEMP-no or CEMP-s subclasses, study the fractions of CEMP stars associated with the different kinematic components of the Galaxy (e.g., inner/outer halo), and provide excellent targets for follow-up high-resolution spectroscopy.
