Abstract

We request GMOS-N time to obtain a spectrum of the bright and extensively observed Type Ic supernova SN 2020oi, at over one year after the explosion. This proposal aims to continue and complete the study we proposed with program GN-2020B-Q-309, planned for January 2021. With this proposal we seek to seize the rare opportunity of obtaining temporal coverage of a Type Ic SN with spectroscopy during the nebular phase. The data we will gather will serve to follow the evolution of emission lines arising from regions of the ejecta near the former stellar core. This in turn provides crucial information about the core mass and the distribution of explosive products. The core mass can in turn be used to derive an initial mass of the progenitor. This is a fundamental parameter that can be contrasted with other independent estimates. The distribution of elements provides information about the explosion mechanism. We will also sample the decline of the light curve and color evolution with g’r’ photometry, which helps to determine the density of the inner ejecta. The analysis we propose to perform is very seldom possible for SNe of this Type and requires the use of an 8m class telescope.
