Abstract
We propose to perform follow-up observations of the outburst comet 129P/Shoemaker-Levy 3 with Gemini-N+GNIRS to characterize the water-ice properties in the ejecta. The proposed observations will be compared with our survey of water ice in comet comae, and will help us understand which properties are correlated with activity level (outburst versus quiescent activity), and, ultimately, if evolutionary mechanisms are responsible for such differences.
