Abstract
We have discovered a new candidate X-ray tidal disruption event. It was serendipitously detected in a recent XMM-Newton observation, showing a very soft X-ray spectrum. However, the characteristic temperature of kT~0.3 keV is much higher than previous candidates or thermal disk around a supermassive black hole (SMBH), but could signal a super-Eddington state characterized by an optically thick low-temperature corona emission. It thus provides a unique opportunity to study the supercritical accretion onto SMBHs. We propose for a 2 hr Gemini spectroscopic observation to measure the redshift and nuclear activity of the host galaxy, in order to calculate the energetics of our event, to test our tidal disruption event explanation of the source, and to estimate the central black hole mass.
