Abstract

We propose to use Michelle in high resolution echelle mode to look for the spectrum of the hydronium ion H3O+ in the upper atmosphere of Saturn. If observed, it would be the first time that the infrared spectrum of this ion has been detected outside of the laboratory. H3O+ will provide crucial information about the coupling of magnetospheric plasma - derived from the rings and icy moons - to the upper atmosphere, and provide planetary scientists with a key probe for investigating the energetics and dynamics of giant planet atmospheres. This proposal supports the current NASA/ESA Cassini Mission.
