Title: | Methane imaging of a Y dwarf candidate in the UKIDSS Deep Extragalactic Survey |
PI: | Paul Dobbie |
Co-I(s): | Nicolas Lodieu |
Abstract
One of the main scientific goals of the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) is to discover the coolest brown dwarfs pre-emptively named Y dwarfs. The latest release of UKIDSS data (DR2plus) occured on 01 March 2007. We have selected from the full six square degrees released in the UKIDSS Deep Extragalactic Survey one potential Y dwarf with an extremely blue J-K colour of -0.71 and J = 20.2 mag. We propose to carry out differential methane imaging (CH4short-CH4long) with NIRI on Gemini North to confirm its substellar status.
